I’ve been in love with spicy and sweet recently. So since I randomly decided that I wanted to learn how to cook, I felt like it was a good time to make some hot honey chicken strips.
I had never had hot honey before making this. I’ve had honey on top of spicy chicken. But never hot honey you know.
Turns out it’s literally just honey and some spices. From the name of it, this definitely is very apparent but I don’t know, I just assumed it would be a little more complicated to make. I was wrong.

Making the hot honey
So there are a few different ways I’ve seen people make hot honey.
- You could do it by adding some dried chillis into some warm honey and then leaving them to infuse.
- You could also mix some honey with some chilli powder.
- Or I’ve also seen people just mix some honey and hot sauce together.
Either way gives you pretty much the same result but I decided to go with the second method because it was just what I had at home.
So all I did was add heat some honey, then I mixed in some cayenne pepper and also some chilli flakes!

Frying these
When frying anything you want to make sure the oil is at the right temperature before frying.
The best temp to fry these is at 180c. However, I know most people probably don’t have a thermometer, I also don’t even use one. I dropped the plastic part into my oil once. It melted. I never used a thermometer again.
Anyway, you can check if the oil is ready by just cutting off a small piece of one of your chicken strips and adding this into the oil. If it starts bubbling straight away, the oil is ready.

Hot Honey Chicken Strips
Ingredients
Chicken strips (I used 2 chicken breasts, sliced them in half, then cut into strips)
- To season the chicken:
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon lemon juice
- For the wet batter:
1 cup plain flour
2 eggs
3/4 cups milk
- For the flour mixture:
2 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon paprika
- For the hot honey:
3/4 cup honey
1.5 teaspoons cayenne pepper powder
1 teaspoon chilli flakes
Directions
- Seasoning the chicken:
- Add the chicken strips into a bowl, add all the seasonings and the lemon juice, then mix everything together.
- Leave this aside whiles you prepare everything else.
- Making the wet batter:
- Add the flour, eggs and milk into a bowl and whisk until smooth.
- The flour mixture:
- For the flour mixture, just whisk the flour with all the seasonings.
- Coating the chicken:
- Once everything has been prepared, start coating the chicken.
- Place a chicken strip into the flour, shake the excess off then dip it into the batter.
- Shake any excess batter off, add it back into the flour mixture and then place onto a wire rack.
- Do with this all the chicken strips and leave them aside, on a wire rack, to rest whiles you heat up some oil.
- Frying them:
- You want to fry these in some oil that is at 180c. Fry them for about 6-8 minutes or until they're a deep brown colour.
- Making the hot honey:
- In a pot, add the honey, cayenne pepper and chilli flakes. Add this pot onto medium-low heat.
- Just heat this until the honey has melted and is runny. Brush this onto both sides of the chicken strips and then you're done, enjoy!
